Why so obsessed with grammar?

First, we should ACQUIRE a second language (Spanish) before we would be able to learn its grammar.

Learning explanations of grammatical structures in our native language when acquiring a second language is done obsessively in every school or corner of the world. It is absurd because adults can’t think in the native language and speak in a second language. It explains why we have such a high rate of failure in acquiring a second language by adults and teens at schools alike. I have been there, I have seen it first hand.

You Do NOT Need To Study Grammar To Acquire Spanish

Ways to master language fluency.

Speak that language.
Try to master the natural tone of the language.
Read a lot.
Listen a lot. Eg. Commentary, documentary, etc.
Watch some entertainment stuff.
Just be aware of how the language is structured/ DON'T analyze it.

Notice please that grammar is created after the coming of any language. We all learned our native language by hearing it a lot in various situations and corrected it when we erred. We inferred the grammar of our language by hearing many examples. Do the same when acquiring Spanish.

  1. It is a fact that flies in the face of a whole world of failed classroom methodologies for foreign language instruction and misconceptions among learners about how we acquire language.

I have seen this topic cause arguments with people who are adamant that grammar study is necessary. I have had fellow co-teachers argue with me when I have approached the subject as if the idea of learning a language without grammar study is ludicrous.

    1. Non-native speakers learn formal grammar consciously, which actually hinders the learner’s ability to speak fluently. Formal grammar requires intelligent analysis and is very slow and impractical for fluent speech.

Formal grammar (syntax) is an abstraction, a theoretical explanation of the function of words. Therefore, trying to memorize the rules of grammar can be a distraction from acquiring conversational skills.

The learner’s brain subconsciously acquires intuitive grammar while you get Spanish input. However, when we consciously learn grammar rules and try to memorize them, we are doomed to make grammatical mistakes.

Formal grammar can’t be used fast during speech and subconsciously.
